Explore, Create, Discover!
The arts are an essential part of life and a child’s education. Studying art prepares a child for so much more than becoming an artist! The arts are deeply embedded in our daily life, often so subtly that we are unaware of their presence. They have deepened our human experience and we need them to help express the inexpressible. A society and a school without art is unimaginable.
Art helps students understand the world around them from a unique and visual perspective. It also helps students perceive and think in new ways. Students practice and learn cross-curricular connections, critical thinking and problem solving skills, dexterity, organization, focus, self expression, teamwork and collaboration, development of their senses, understanding of human experiences, and visual communication. On top of learning all of those skills, creating and studying art makes us feel good, helps us connect to one another, celebrate the world around us, and gives us something to be proud of.
At Mountain Discovery, I try to expose students to many different forms of art media, artists from different times and places, and new ways of looking at the world around them. Using the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Visual Arts as a guide, each student is able to participate in many art opportunities. We are fortunate to live in such an inspiring environment and community and I try to take full advantage of our surroundings. It is my goal as an art teacher to give each student the opportunity to practice technical skills and creative expression, and learn to create something unique and satisfying.
