Our February Field Trip to NOAA, in Asheville, NC
(National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration)
The COOLEST facts I learned on this field trip were:
~ Climate is the long term weather record and metrology is the short term weather record. (Tyler W.)
~ The archives in their basement have 80,000 boxes of climate data covering over 100 years from all over USA and some from other countries! (Cameron)
~ Sylva gets an average of 55 inches of rain a year. (Mackenzie)
~ Landscape effects how much rain we get. (Amelia)
~ The GOES Satellite (Geostationary Operational Satellite) is 88 feet long. (Jacquelynne)
~ The GOES Satellite stays in one place while the earth moves. (Katy C.)
~ I saw an old Asheville newspaper from July 19, 1916, that told about a flood that killed 15 citizens. (Hunter)
~ Back then when NOAA started building their first computer it weighed 1 ton (2,000 lb) and had less internet capacity than a cell-phone has right now. (Logan)
~ One super computer can serve up to 1000 normal computers. They could overheat very easy. (Sayre)
~ Just one of NOAA’s internet computers is can now do the work of 3,000 laptop computers! (Tyler A.) ***
~ There is an air conditioner flow vent about 1 ˝ feet high under the floor of NOAA’s computer room to keep it cool. (Mackenna)
~ When a person that studies weather sends up a balloon that gathers data from all regions. But before the balloon bursts, it can get as big as a house! (David)
~ The weather balloons take temperatures, air pressures, wind speed and more information when up in the air. (Austin)
~ The higher the mountains are, the more acid rain falls there each year. (Jake)
~ The South is more prone to natural disaster then the Northern USA. ( Katie S.)
~ Their Internet Service is worth the speed of a total of 4000 Normal computers. (Adrian)
