HAVE A FABULOUS SUMMER!!!

"The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible."        Arthur C. Clarke

The fifth grade has taken on two service projects this year:

            1) Weekly Recycling:   After each grade level puts their own paper, cardboard and drink containers in the bins next to the office, rotating teams organize the recyclables and load them into Ms. Trish’s van every Friday.  We appreciate Ms. Trish’s time and efforts for handling it from there!  We also are grateful for the plastic recycling containers which were supplied by Swain County.

              2) Pennies for Peace:  After hearing parts of the book, Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen read aloud by Ms. Janet, the fifth graders chose Greg as the theme for their September Community Circle presentation. They explained how Greg Mortensen single-handedly coordinates the building of schools in remote villages in Pakistan and Afghanistan where there were no schools at all!

After the Community Circle, the fifth grade invited all MDCS students to put coins in their class Pennies for Peace jar. Every Friday 5th graders collect the coins. So far about $340 has been given!! Amazing!!  We will continue collecting through the first day of school after the New Year.  Fifth grade set a goal of $600 but actually made a grand total of $726.40!

On a chilly October day, we went to Clingmans Dome for a program with the park service about climate, weather, and impacts of air pollution that happen at higher elevations. We were at 6,643 feet! Our art teacher, Ms.Dana, came too and taught us about perspective. We did some sketches before leaving. It was a fantastic trip.

On February 18, 2009, the fifth grade went to the Physics Lab at WCU (Western Carolina University) to do some activities about force and motion, one of our Science units. Some of us got to ride on a hovercraft.

                                                                                                                                   ~Garrett~

Sam and Cooper both rode and had this to say about it...

"I think it was a fun sensation! The leaf blower sent air between the hovercraft and the floor. This made the hovercraft move without touching the floor, because there was no friction. When the leaf blower was turned off, the hovercraft dropped to the floor."~Sam

"I thought it was a thrilling ride that filled people with fun giggles. We swept across the floor, about 20 feet before Dr.Rave turned off the leaf blower and friction stopped us. I wish we had more time because a lot students did not get to ride it. I hope we can go there again soon."~Cooper

  WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY FIELD TRIP

We're getting ready to check out a dorm room. Ms. Samantha was a great guide and helped us imagine life as a student at WCU., "I can see myself here!" several students told Ms. Janet.

The old Bell Tower is just outside the Student Center. WOW! "Did you see that cool climbing wall inside?" You can use it for free if you go to WCU!"  MSCS 5th graders were impressed.
