Welcome to Second Grade!

Second grade is filled with many new and exciting adventures. Our curriculum and expeditions are centered around the N.C. Standards for second grade and expansions on these that arouse the interest and involvement of the students. Expeditions in second grade primarily concentrate on animals, insects and countries of the world.. For Math we follow the Everyday Mathematics Curriculum. It is a great program that uses a lot of hands-on manipulatives to help children learn and understand basic facts and processes. We read a lot in second grade. The children are exposed to many different authors and genres by being read to and also by being part of a reading group. I have a large classroom library where children can select books to “check out”. and We go to the school library at least once a week to check out books from there. There are incentive rewards given to all the students who complete reading assignments and read other things in addition to their homework assignment. Another exciting experience is learning how to research and type on the computers in our computer lab. The Expeditionary Learning/Outward Bound Design Principles are a big part of second grade and the school community. These design principles empower students to take responsibility for their learning. Understanding these principles helps to build character and helps the students become well rounded individuals. I believe that open communication between parents and teachers is very important to foster a positive educational experience for the children.
