Links for class: Study Sheets: Class Date: 8-29-07 Internet Terminology Study Sheet Internet: A worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer An Internet Protocol address or IP address is a unique computer (host) location on the Internet (expressed either as a unique string of numbers or as its associated URL). Domain Name: A domain name locates an organization or other entity on the Internet. A domain name is associated with an IP address. For example, mountaindiscovery.org is linked to 68.178.254.180. This is a shared IP address, so more than one URL resolves to this IP address. URL (Uniform Resource Locator): The unique address for a file on the internet. For example, www.solarisnetwork.com/glossary is the URL that directs a web browser to the online glossary for a theatre lighting supply company. Enter the URL into the address bar of a web browser and see for yourself. Web Browser: A software program that allows a user to look at and interact with all of the information on the internet. Examples: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla Firefox. Hyperlink: A link embedded in the text of a web page or other file that a user can click and navigate to the file or web page. A hyperlink is frequently highlighted and/or underlined.
Class Date: 8-27-07 Network Terminology Study Sheet Network: Two or more computers linked together. Each computer is able to send and receive information to the other. LAN (Local Area Network)- A system of wires, or wireless access points, and other hardware that connects computers at one location. There is no public traffic on a LAN. The MDCS network is an example of a LAN. WAN (Wide Area Network)- The broader telecommunications network that serves to connect computers across the public domain. Example: The Verizon network and all other telecom networks that carries email and internet service to all of their customers. ISP (Internet Service Provider)- An ISP is a company that provides individuals and other companies access to the Internet and other related services such as Web site building. Intranet: A private network contained within an organization. Usually, an intranet exists across more than one physical location. A network including for Swain County Schools that links the central office and all of the schools together would be an intranet. Leased space on the public WAN is used to link the LAN’s together. Firewall: A program or set of programs that regulate outside access to an Intranet or private network. The firewall prevents outsiders from accessing any data on the network and determines what data domain users can access from an outside computer. |
